The process of Alchemy, the precursor to modern chemistry, is closely reflected in the coffee process. In order to arrive at ground coffee, it needs to travel through the four elements: earth, water, air, then fire. 

The spiritual side of Alchemy teaches that through combining the elements we reach the fifth element, the spirit. Coffee gives us spirit in a different sense, and helps us reach higher parts of our consciousness.
